How to Keep Schools Fire-Safe All Year Round

Fire safety in schools isn’t a once-a-year job, it’s an ongoing responsibility.

At Nortec Fire, we work with nurseries, primary and secondary schools across the North East to ensure that fire safety is not only compliant but consistent, no matter the season. Here’s how you can keep your premises protected all year round.

  1. Schedule Regular Fire Risk Assessments

A fire risk assessment is a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, but it’s also the foundation of a safe school. We recommend reviewing your assessment annually or whenever there are changes to the building or how it’s used. The best time? During the summer holidays or half-term breaks when disruption is minimal and access is easier.

  1. Maintain Fire Extinguishers and Equipment

Fire extinguishers should be serviced at least once a year by a qualified technician. Equipment like fire blankets, hose reels and signage must also be checked regularly to ensure everything is in place and working. Routine servicing helps identify any faults early and keeps your site prepared for emergencies.

  1. Test Fire Alarms Weekly

Weekly fire alarm tests are a must in any school. Make sure staff know when the tests are scheduled and that the results are logged and reviewed. Regular testing helps confirm that alarms are fully functional and gives everyone confidence in the system.

  1. Keep Staff Trained and Informed

Fire safety is a shared responsibility. Be sure your team knows how to respond in an emergency, how to use extinguishers, and what evacuation procedures are in place. Refresher training should be held regularly and included in the induction process for all new staff.

  1. Review Fire Safety Ahead of Every Term

Each term brings different risks! From increased use of cooking equipment during holiday clubs to open evenings, school plays and seasonal decorations. Build fire safety into your planning cycle by reviewing risk assessments and equipment at the start of every term.
